Mom called again today. Mom's calls are turning out to be a wealth of information. I got very gently chided for not calling my grandfather yet, but I pointed out I'd been sick, and she was really sweet about it. Instead, she just gave me the phone number to Grandpa's room at his new rehabilitative hospital, and told me he'd have a therapy appointment at 3pm PT, and I should call him before that. No problems there! More on that in a minute.
Then Mom gave the big news. Eric left for Iraq on Thursday. His batallion is there for 911 emergencies, like injuries, fire fighting, that sort of thing. Basically, he's part of the peacekeeping forces. All he could say about where he would be is 'inside a big city'. He called Dad this morning, but could not say where he was. Family speculation is that he's in downtown Baghdad, but he could also be headed towards one of the other cities in Iraq. There is no estimate of when he'll be home. Just...whenever he's done. My aunt has already put in a bid for Eric's 'deck of cards', which cracks us all up. Said aunt is exceedingly well off, but is kind of our family's guardian angel in ways. She's my mom's best friend from high school.
Mom saw said aunt while she was out in California this week visiting my grandfather. My grandfather's HMO is being fussy, and my aunt is having a lawyer friend write them a letter in hopes to get them to behave. This is a wonderful thing, since Grandpa is going to need a lot of rehabilitation. Still, he is starting to move his left side again, and the facial droop is gone, so he's not paralyzed. Yay! He sounded -really- drained and slurring when I called though, but he was more than feisty enough to inform me Dean needed to start taking Spirulina so he wouldn't get cancer again. Thankfully, I've had many long years of practice of not laughing at his notions, and I love him too much to argue with him. I just want him to get well, and move to Texas to live with my parents.
So I'm thinking happy thoughts for both my Grandpa and my brother. Happy Saturday, all!
