Home! Finally
Jun. 16th, 2005 09:09 pmI finally get to stop traveling for a while, not that I didn't have fun! Tuesday I left for New Braunfels for our faculty retreat for school. Fun times to be had by all! Yeah, we did a lot of pedagogical work, pouring over data and hammering out objectives for next school year. We also did a lot of nifty team building stuff. I had to miss Tuesday night to drive back up to Georgetown for more auditioning, but even that was eye-opening. Rather than the 'you're doing something that takes away time from your job, which should be your whole life', the attitude I expected, I got huge amounts of hugs and massive amounts of support and well-wishes. The next morning, everyone wanted to know how it went, and were honestly excited for me. *happy sigh*
Anyhow, on that front, I don't know how it went. I -felt- like the audition went well, but the cast list isn't up yet, so no news just yet! I did get a script assigned to me though!
Anyhoo, back to the retreat. Wednesday morning we did a ropes course, where you climb up on telephone poles and jump off them in various ways. I climbed a 36' pole, got to the top, and leapt off to grab a ring. (Everyone's on harnesses and tons of hooks, so while it's terrifying, it's safe.) Then I climbed a 50' pole, walked across a 30' or so tightwire with wide-space ropes to hang on to, to another pole with a platform, sat on the edge of the platform and jumped off to swing at the end of a rope like a Lisa-pinata. Lastly, I climbed another 50' pole, then did a zip line down. Yaaaay! I was -wiped-, but I loved it all. I really was amazed how much I learned about myself. ( Instrospection snipped. )
The other big event was everyone gathering in the retreat's tavern and doing karaoke and drinking rather too much. Thankfully, I only had $5 on me, and just had one drink and a bunch of water. And yes, I did sing, although that was more terrifying than anything on the ropes course! In fact, I sang a whole heck of a lot, since lots of stuff we just all got up there an sang. The kindergarten team roped me into a solo though, which has had interesting developments. The administration found out how much I know about music, and now they've asked if I'd consider getting my music certification this summer and possibly teaching that instead of 5th grade.
...
That's me being speechless. I've wanted to be a music teacher since I was 10 years old, but assumed I never could because I thought it required a music degree. Still, Dean made a good point. Music teachers can easily be let go in district cutbacks. On the other hand, our district is -booming-, with a new elementary scheduled to be opened every year for the next several years. I have a lot to think about there, too, it seems.
So, now I'm home. I'm exhausted but happy, and clearly I have lots to ponder. But first I'm going to play Sims and then sleep.
