To each his own?

Given that today is the Sunday before Christmas, as well as the fourth Sunday in Advent, Dean and I decided to go to church. Given that I'm Lutheran, and there's a Lutheran church about five minutes from us, that was a no-brainer. I will give them this...the people were -nice-. The pastor was an affable man, the congregation was small and young-ish with lots and lots and lots of children. Now, having said that, I can boggle. They had no sermon. None. The service lasted an hour and a half, and an hour of it was chant and response. I recognized one hymn, and that was Hark the Herald Angels Sing. That, for the record, was the only Christmas carol. And there was no sermon. I know, I said that already, but it just blew us both away. The antiphone (chanting) was just flat out dull and boring. About 45 minutes into this, I leaned over to Dean and whispered, "I'm -bored-." For me to say that really says something as I tend to prefer more sedate, liturgical services. Okay, so maybe that wasn't quite the place for us. Next week we're going to try a Baptist church, since that's what Dean is. Maybe we'll end up compromising and ending up in a Presbyterian or something. It's really all six of one, half a dozen of the other in my mind. I figure it's all just different ways of looking at the same ideas, and we're just looking for the place that suits our comfort level best. Also, it's another thing he and I can do together, and that's a really nice thing.
After church, we had lunch at Hooters, because I wanted a hamburger and they have great ones. Hamburgers, that is. ;)
Then we headed off to Walmart, as I am finally all Christmas infused and wanted to look at decorations. It was so insanely crowded though, we just deposited Dean's paycheck at the bank there and scooted on out, and up to Best Buy. Yaaay BB! I scored Civilization III, which I feel is quite a bit more difficult than II, but likely it's just that I'm getting used to the playing style.
Vacation is here!!!! Yaaaay! I do not have to work tomorrow. I'm going to take Dean to the train station, then come home and sleep. I plan to do a bunch of laundry as well, as it needs doing. After that? Who knows. Maybe I'll sleep more. ;)

Date: 2002-12-22 02:22 pm (UTC)This was not because of chanting (good thing, I would have fallen asleep) but instead because of the Christmas pageant, "The Life and Times of Santa Claus: An Unauthorized Biography." It was much more fun than a sermon. ;) It made me laugh a lot, and it even made me sniffle.
Good luck finding a place, though. :) It really does seem like the place you went to today is not the place for you guys.
