Work Rant

I'm trying to plunk in the schedule for next week, and it's one interruption after another. I'm about to implode, but only because it's that proverbial last nerve that's being twanged.

There are some days I simply cannot believe the stupidity of some people. We're a childcare center. We take care of kids. So to me, it seems pretty obvious that -yes-, our doors have to stay locked and we have to stay secure. For god's sake, we're an inner city establishment, and there are creepy people around a lot! Also, we're supposed to have two exits to our building for fire safety. Is this happening this week? No.

Our back door is busted. Unless it's entirely unlocked, no one can get outside that's already inside. The panic bar has broken parts that are currently on order. So the question is...lock the door, leave it shut, and we have a fire hazard of not being able to get outside? Or leave it unlocked and have it be a Security hazard? Now normally, I'd say leave it unlocked since our guard is stationed at the back of the building, right by that door, and can monitor it easily. But...

The new head of Security decided since this is Spring Break, campus really needed no coverage. Yesterday our guard left at 10:15. I called Security to ask for another guard, and was told one would be in by noon. Since I work in the front of the building it was 4pm before I realized...hey, still no guard! But back up. When I found the guard was leaving in the first place, I called my department chair...and left a message. Then I called the next level up, the Dean of Instruction's office. I explained the situation, and was told to call Admin Services, who are in charge of maintenance and security. *sigh* So I call Admin Services and talk to the secretary there. She tells me since it just seems to be a one day problem, buck up and deal until noon. Okay, not a great thing to hear, but I can deal. Then at 4pm when we realize there's not been a guard all day, I called her back to let her know. She acted like I was being personally offensive to her, and that I never indicated we should have had a guard at noon. Now I -know- I told her that. So basically, I ended up calling all the powers that be, and got diddly shit in response.

So today comes around and at 10am, lo, the guard is leaving and we're evidently not getting a guard for the rest of the day. Ah-ha! But today there is a difference. My boss Ruth is back -and- our departmental chair just happened to be visiting. Ruth and Barbara are both middling aged black women with children and grandchildren who have fought and scraped to get their educations (both -highly- educated women), and I respect them both immensely. What it also means though is that I wouldn't cross them if you -paid- me. So now they're both on the warpath. Ruth called the new guy in charge of Security and let him have it with both barrels. We had a guard down here before she got off the phone with him, -and- she's going to go to the Dean to let her know just all the mess we've been having with the situation.

See, for some reason, the new Security head thinks that not only should we leave that back door unlocked, that we don't need -any- security down here! Hello! We all just got a flyer today about a rapist attacking women on campus, so they -cut- Security? This man is clearly in need of a brain, because he sure as hell doesn't have one. It's that sort of sheer stupidity that gets people hurt, and I for one do not want to be a victim because this man is a moron and can't do his job. So hooray for Ruth! Hooray for Barbara! Go get 'em, ladies!

In other news, my grandfather will not be moving in with my parents due to differences of opinion. Evidently my parents are such awful sinners, their sin might rub off on him.

{crickets chirping}

No, I'm not kidding. Of course, now I really want to be like my Mom when I grow up. ;)

In more happy news, Dean and I are heading up to Philly on Friday night to go to see the Ringling Bros. circus. We went maybe five years ago in Texas and loved it, and the circus has always been one of my favorite childhood memories. It'll distinctly be a nice distraction, since my hands are really, really acting up again. The Celebrex still helps, but only to a certain degree. Ah, well, enough rambling and back to work. If I don't surface by 4pm, send in the rescue team!

Whoa! I'm glad your employers managed to get the problem solved. It sounds like that Security doofus needs to re-read his job description.

And your Mom's even cooler that she was before.

DTCC Security couldn't a stop a tape player---nevermind something worse! BUT I see your point-! Maybe if they spent less time hounding us for parking permits--(remeber that fiasco) and worried about crucial stuff---life would be just a little bit better!

PS---how is the schedule???

Hee! What I've gotten done so far? Not bad! Although I gotta adjust folks down to 27 hours to make up for the staff meeting on Friday. Evil old 29 hour limit. Grr.
